Central Registration Plate Reissuance

Central Registration Plate Reissuance

CENTRAL REGISTRATION PLATE REISSUANCE -- In an effort to begin replacing the oldest registration plates in use the Department began a reissuance process in January 2018. This process uses PennDOT staff and the existing network of agents and dealers to replace registration some of our oldest plates.

PennDOT is now adjusting the general reissuance program to include the “K” series passenger plates and remove the “E” and “F” series registration plates. Effective January 12, 2025, all ‘K’ series passenger plates must be transferred and replaced the same way ‘G’, ‘H’, ‘J’ and ‘Y’ series registration plates are being replaced today. These plate series were manufactured over ten years ago and many are showing their age.

No, Pennsylvania state vehicle inspections are not stopping in 2025

Reported by fox43.com - August 13, 2024

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Social media posts have recently circulated online, claiming Pennsylvania is ending annual vehicle inspections on January 1, 2025.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) most recent Vehicle Safety Inspection Program Effectiveness Study, vehicle safety inspections in the U.S. started in 1926. By 1929, Pennsylvania enacted laws requiring periodic inspections.

Currently, all registered vehicles in Pennsylvania must be inspected either semiannually or annually, according to PennDOT. Noncommercial private vehicles are required to be inspected once a year.
