REMINDER: Central and General Registration Plate Reissuance PennDOT Bulletin 26-03

REMINDER: Central and General Registration Plate Reissuance -- PennDOT is continuing our efforts to replace the oldest registration plates on vehicles currently in use. Please see the Departments updates below for both the central reissuance and general reissuance programs:

REMINDER: Central and General Registration Plate Reissuance PennDOT Bulletin 26-03

Updates:

  • PennDOT is completing the central registration plate reissuance for configurations beginning with “D,” “E,” “F,” and “Y.”
  • PennDOT is scheduling the addition of registration plates beginning with “G” to the central reissuance process. We estimate the implementation of this add to occur on June 1, 2026. At that point, customers who have plates beginning with the “G” configuration will begin receiving letters informing them that their registration plate will be replaced by PennDOT through the central reissuance program. Beginning June 1, 2026, “G”  series plates will not be replaced by agents during a registration transfer.\
  • PennDOT is scheduling the addition of registration plates beginning with  “L”  to the general reissuance process. Beginning June 1, 2026, the “L” series must be replaced during a registration transfer, and replaced the same way “H,” “J,” and “K” series registration plates are being replaced today.

Central Reissuance Program Reminders:

If you are processing a passenger plate beginning with “G” on or after June 1, 2026, you must transfer the registration plate since they are no longer eligible for a free replacement at the time of transfer.

Dealers should consider processing times when performing a transaction with a registration transfer involving a “G” series plate. If sending the transaction to the department to process, please assume a “G” series plate will be transferred if the Department receives the transaction on June 1, 2026, or later.

Online agents must consider their own internal processing time when determining whether to replace or transfer a “G” series plate. If a “G” series plate is replaced in error after the date above, the customer will be charged the replacement fee, and the agent/dealer will not be reimbursed for the plate.

Agents are required to ensure all their employees receive PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services
update bulletins. This bulletin may be downloaded by visiting the Driver and Vehicle Services
website at www.pa.gov/dmv.
