Tax refund buyers often arrive in a late-winter rush. Chris Neylan outlines how refund advance programs can help you begin serving those customers earlier in the season.

For the vast majority of automotive consumers, the annual tax refund remains the only time of year when they have access to a large source of liquidity. This seasonal influx of capital completely alters a buyer's reality by expanding their purchasing power, opening up vehicle options they otherwise couldn't afford, and providing the critical down payment needed to secure financing. Last year, the average tax refund increased by 11%, adding billions of dollars to the economy and boosting car sales in Q1. With many tax credits receiving an annual inflation adjustment, we anticipate the average 2027 tax refund to increase as well. For some consumers, refunds will exceed $10,000, giving them even greater purchasing power and a much higher ceiling for their down payments.
However, most dealerships do not see their tax season rush until the end of February and into early March. This delay is largely due to the federal IRS PATH Act, which legally requires the IRS to hold most refunds containing major credits— such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit—until late February. This mandatory federal freeze creates a massive seasonal bottleneck, resulting in an overwhelming, highstress sales rush compressed into an unnecessarily short window.
That is where a strategic tax season partner can change your dealership's tax season timeline and overall profitability.
A specialized tax season partner, like Tax Max, provides dealers with an early tax refund advance program, allowing both dealerships and their buyers to bypass the slow IRS waiting game. A tax refund advance program enables dealerships to give customers immediate access to up to $7,500 of their expected tax refund on the same day, beginning as early as January 2—months before the IRS would normally disburse the funds. This is especially valuable because many tax refund buyers prefer an option like this: it allows them to purchase a vehicle now rather than wait for their refund to arrive.
This simple operational addition can transform your calendar, allowing your tax season sales volume to run smoothly for several months instead of just a few frantic weeks. It also helps dealerships capture eager buyers before local competitors even open their doors for the rush.
For years, independent and franchise dealers alike have accepted that January and February are inevitably slow months for lot traffic and conversions. It is time to challenge your dealership to do something different. Consider partnering with a tax season provider that can deliver a reliable advance program, increase deal flow, maximize inventory turns, and unlock high-margin opportunities during the industry's traditionally slower months.

Bill Neylan founded Tax Refund Services in 1995 and acquired Tax Max in 2006 to become the largest tax preparation company in the United States to focus solely on the car dealer customer. In June of 2019, Tax Max has partnered with the Autotrader BHPH Center to help dealers generate leads and leads specific to consumers wanting to use the tax refund or future tax refund to purchase a vehicle. In 2020, Tax Max created the “File & Drive” Sales event where the customer files directly with Tax Max and the dealer no longer does any of the work. And NEW for 2025, Tax Max is launching our Tax Season Consulting Groups where we will help your tax season program from November to March. Tax Max has processed over 1 MILLION returns and Bill’s 31 years of experience in the automotive industry ranges from annual face to face interaction with the customer to participation in a number of state, regional, and national automotive and BHPH associations and trade groups. Each year, the Tax Max program generates $100 to $200 MILLION in tax refund checks for their dealerships to disperse to their customers. Tax Max dealers operate under one simple concept: by being the company to hand the customer the tax refund dollars, they are in the best position to be the first place the tax refund money is spent every year. To be brief, Tax Max gives the dealer the ability to convert a paystub and/or a W2 into a down payment using various programs to maximize tax season such as our 1st quarter “File and Drive Program”, 4th quarter program which allows you to sell cars starting in October, collections, repairs and their new all year-round program – Tax Season 365.
