Patrick O’Brien is Director of Government Relations and Compliance for the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA), overseeing NIADA’s advocacy efforts in Washington, DC. Prior to joining NIADA, Patrick served as the Staff Director for the External Affairs Division at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). He previously served as the acting Assistant Director of the Office of Stakeholder Management. In both roles he was responsible for identifying and executing strategies to engage stakeholders and the American public to promote understanding, transparency, and accountability for the CFPB's work. From 2017 -- 2021, Patrick served as the Deputy Associate Director for the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network’s (FinCEN) Strategic Operations Division, the Division responsible for managing all of FinCEN’s engagement with domestic and international stakeholders across the entire spectrum of government and the private sector. From 2015 – 2017, Patrick was with the CFPB, where he served as Deputy Assistant Director for Legislative Affairs focusing on the House of Representatives. Prior to his time at the CFPB, Patrick spent eight years as FinCEN’s Chief Congressional Liaison where he managed the Bureau’s engagement with both chambers of Congress. From 1998 to 2003, Patrick worked in the United States Senate for a senior member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Judiciary, and Armed Services Committees. In between government service, Patrick spent several years as a federal government relations professional in the financial services industry. Patrick earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, and served in the United States Marine Corps.
